Galeria Pedro Cera is pleased to announce its participation at Art|38|Basel, integrated in the Art Statements section with the project Film Festival by Ricardo Valentim.

The piece Film Festival is comprised of a series of seventy screenings featuring seventy educational films produced for educational programs at the North American and British public schools and libraries between 1950s and 1980s. The films were originally commissioned from various agencies including advertisement firms, tourist boards, universities, United Nations, US Department of Education and others. All films are in 16mm format.

Film Festival aims to define a moment of doubt, questioning the concept and the image of the “other”. The act of voiding the notion of difference is a protagonist for the construction of a democracy of display, thereby destabilizing preconceived notions of difference.

Conceptually, Ricardo Valentim conceived Film Festival to be considered a new piece each time that is exhibited, and is meant to be displayed in as many different venues as possible, so it can address to different social contexts every time that is exhibited.

Previous venues include Galeria Pedro Cera in Lisbon, Galeria Luisa Strina in São Paulo and the E-Flux space in New York.

Ricardo Valentim was born in Loulé, Portugal in 1978. Studied in New York – MFA at the School of Visual Arts – where it currently works and lives. His body of work comprises films, video, photography, sculpture and painting.
