Characterized by a language of reduced forms and shapes – areas defined by solid fields of color, the work of Antonio Ballester Moreno explores the human relationship with the image and the roots of pictorial representation at large. Making the conceptualization of schematic images, a graphic structure that portrays our conceptual categorization and perceptual constancies of the world, the point of departure of his work, Ballester Moreno examines the nature of human perception and the way we understand and construct, through images, the world we live in.
Sin título (Peces), 2019 is part of a group of works for which an approximation towards the pictorial field of representation becomes characteristic. Motives derived from nature continue to occupy the work of Ballester Moreno. His engagement with these themes results from their universality and permanency, making their meaning unchanged regardless of culture and place. Assigning a strong emphasis to the subject of horizontality, despite the actual verticality of the painting, the manner of its depiction is suggestive of landscape, highlighting the continuation of the image beyond the surface of the canvas and connecting it with real life. The motive of the fish surrounded by small irregular waves generates a sense of movement, a reference to the passage of time, which connects the work with the theme of temporality. Rejecting the legacy of modernity and instead depicting time from a biological perspective, characteristic for its slowness, the work shapes a powerful opposition towards post-industrial modes of life, actively challenging our present understanding of time as capital, where biological time is considered waste.
Painted on untreated, raw jute with layers of liquid paint, a process reminiscent of dyeing clothes, the porous nature of the canvas, rich texture, and strong material presence appropriates the basic from the cycle of life, taking us back to the once familiar, to the universal, to what we all share.
